HI Denyse, I've read a few of the Elizabeth Strout books and enjoyed them. I agree a narrator makes or breaks an audio book. I remember listening to Little Women and could not finish it because of the narrator's voice. Thanks for sharing #WBOYC? and have a lovely October. We have a State election in October so will be voting early.

Thanks Sue, good to know that you enjoyed Elizabeth Strout's books too. Yes to 'ditching' the book if the narrator grates! I have done that a few times.

October seems far away as we are back to almost winter weather here but the calendar says it's next Tuesday and I know that I need to see the prosthodontist on that date.

Elections...we are now permanently postal voters and it eases the need to line up.

Thanks for the link up and being a supporter here.

I'm with you, Denyse, I have to love the narrator to listen to an audio book. If I'm reading an autobiography, I prefer the author narrate. I still primarily read books, but audio books are great for road trips!

Ah yes, if the narrator is the author and it is that type of book I agree, Christie.

I did get told recently by a couple of memoir writers when I asked why they hadn't narrated one of their books, that because of being unwell they couldn't get to the studio. I understand that.

Thanks for commenting and supporting my words here.

I've slowly bumped my speed up to 1.75 for most audiobooks and it drives my family nuts but I honestly don't even notice it! LOL. I too find that the narrators voice makes a huge difference in whether I enjoy (stick with!) the story or not.

OH my, I thought 1.4 was high but 1.75 makes me go 'woah' and smile.

Yes to the narrator's voice being a key to enjoying my listen too Joanne.

Thanks for dropping by to comment.

Hi Denyse - nice to see that you're being mindful and finding ways to be kind to yourself when you're not at your best. My MIL has lost most of her sight and I wish she'd get into audio books, but unfortunately she's very reluctant to try anything new - she'd rather just sit and complain - and isn't that a sad way to see out the remainder of life?!

Thank you Leanne. I do my best to keep my self-care working for me!

I have a thought about your MIL....because I struck something similar with Dad trying to get him to listen to books - I gave him CDs and he had a CD player.

He used it very little and I found out from him that it 'was too hard' and he was not up to learning new stuff. I know it showed itself as some crankiness too but I now realise it was fear.

The loss of independence and ageing is fearful for sure.

I wonder that your MIL may be that way too....it does not condone rudeness though as I know I would say that to Dad. However, I also took into account our years of difference in age and my competence with some things he did not want to try.

Take care and I appreciate your wise words always.

Hi, Denyse - Thank you so much for joining us and for the shout-out.

I've read five Elizabeth Strout books so far and enjoyed four of them. I understand that not all authors can reach all readers at all times. But sadly, the fifth novel I read (Amy and Isabelle) was not a great reading experience for me, so I took a pause from my Strout reading there. I definitely will pick it up again. Thank you for the reminder.

No worries Donna, glad to have given you the reminder. That book you mention was written long before the series about Lucy and also those relating to Olive. I won't listen to it. She is a prolific author and I know why she has great output because she seems to notice the little life things and puts them together in stories that appeal to many. I did not feel I missed anything by being an Australian listener as her topics were/are universal.

Take care, and thank YOU for the link up too.
