Lovely memories, Denyse. I'm glad you can visit an ocean beach when you feel like it. I love beaches and go to a lake beach here regularly. I live far from an ocean but close to one of the Great Lakes. Thank you for sharing. #TeamWWWhimsy

It's good to have water as a place of peace and enjoyment. Thanks for visiting Natalie.

And yes re the other beaches are often a let down compared to the Australian ones. THe WA ones really blew me away tho! Very under-rated.

I thought North Shore of Oahu would be raging. Nope. Not a decent wave at all and it was in January. Interesting about other beaches in Australia too.

Cheers

I had no idea you surfed! Good for you! (You and Agatha Christie, I've discovered!). It does explain the pull of the ocean that's so strong in you (and gives us all the lovely pictures over the years). I love this post. We all have so much hiding under the surface. #WWHimsy

It was my idea for readers to know that I am not ‘just what I have mostly written about” glad you enjoyed knowing more about me.

I find it very hard to find any beaches that compare with Aussie beaches! We have a good range of different types here on the Gold Coast.

Loved hearing about your love of the beach

Thank you Janine. Yes the Gold Coast does indeed and had that awful storm damage. My late parents holidayed for 6 or so weeks to the GC once Dad retired. First few years they stayed in Surfers where they could access the beach and some lucky grandkids got to visit from Sydney. Then they went further down the coast to Burleigh and spent the final years of holidays there. I flew up for a few days on one occasion. Mum hated the cold of Sydney in Winter so a sunny apartment in Qld was great.

We are spoiled for choice BUT not everyone who visits the beaches grew up as I did with a healthy respect for safety!Too often we see the news don't we where there are drownings and near drowings.

Warm wishes

How wonderful your parents got to enjoy some quality time in their retirement enjoying life. I’m like your mum and don’t enjoy long cold winters.

You are so right regarding the need to have a healthy respect for the surf. Sadly there have been many tragedies here.

I live in Los Angeles and I don't find Venice Beach for me either. It's a little too crazy for me.

It might be as it's so busy with people wanting to "show off" .. kind of what I noted!

Thanks Julie!

Thanks for sharing these lovely memories Denyse. The beach is a special place and I always enjoy a trip to the beach. Living inland now for over 30 years, I make the most of the coast whenever I have the opportunity. Thanks for joining us at Min's #WWWhimsy linkup.

Yes indeed to making the most of it when you can Deb. I am enjoying living closer to waterways of the Hawkesbury too now and just back from a little drive locally to see the creek at Cattai.

Take care and enjoy your QLD stay!

What a great insight to teen you! I've never surfed and can't even sit in a kayak without tipping it but I often look out at the waves and wish I could.

Your solo trips inspire me greatly, one day maybe that will be me!

Thank you B. It is exhilarating to catch a wave in via a body board or similar. I loved doing that. Not a stand up on the board person at all.

As you live pretty close to the ocean I reckon "never say never"

Take care

I've never been able to surf standing up either; we call it body surfing here and I've only been able to do that or use boogie boards. Our beaches don't really warm up at all here in New England so even in summer the water is shockingly cold. But I have enjoyed visiting beaches all up and down the eastern seaboard as well as in Hawaii!

Yes it's body surfing here too Joanne. I think I may have tried standing up on a surfboard as a teen ! Not successful. Interesting about water temps because you are nearer to the North Pole! Yes to Hawaii temps. I remember those well. Good to know what you've enjoyed about the surf too! Take care, Denyse x

It was interesting to read about your teen years surfing and being near the sea! I didn't grow up near the ocean but perhaps for that reason, when I chose to live in a seaside city (Göteborg) I became intrigued by the sea and grew a love and passion for the wildness and beauty of the sea. Now I can sit on a beach or a cliff to just watch and listen the waves and it's soothing for the soul when I'm tired. I'm so blessed now to live on a peninsula and having walking distance to the sea in almost all directions.

Hi Denyse you truly are a Surfer Girl, Denyse. I think I’ve mentioned as a child we would catch the ferry to Manly and then home via bus to Naremburn. Such lovely memories. My SIL is a keen surfer. There sis something about being near or in the ocean isn’t there? Thanks for sharing at Wednesday Words & Whimsy and have a lovely week. Sue L #Teamwhimsy. Xx

Thanks Sue. I do remember how you enjoyed your visits to Manly by ferry and home by bus. Always nice to recall what we loved doing...and still can when we get the chance.

I miss the easier access to the ocean living here but am glad I can visit again when I am up for it.

Thanks for the link up hosting.

Take care,

Hi Denyse - lovely early memories - especially the teenage ones. I remember spending my summer weekends at our local beach too. It was all about the suntan, the friends, and the swimming. These days it's about the occasional walk when the weather is "just right".
