You were definitely rewarded with a beautiful day for your efforts. There's something so rejuvenating about the beach. Come July, let's organised that catch up - long over due.
We visited Australia in 1988 as my husband Rob had 2 weeks work there. We were lucky enough to visit Manly beach and I'm sure we visited Balgowlah RSL....does that sound right? It's a long time ago! So good you're feeling better and visiting your special places Denyse ✨️ 😘
We had our honeymoon in Manly in 1974. It's a different place now though. I'm very happy for you that you were able to had a day out there and revive all those beautiful memories. I have been thinking about you and your Dad today. I remember reading about the difficulty he had over handing over his licence. Today we have been to Mums, which is 2 hours from us, to take her to do her errands as she handed her licence in about a month ago. I'm really pleased that we decided to go and help her out each week, as she seems to be handling her loss of independence a little bit better. Still struggling with acceptance but she is moving closer towards it. I was pleased I read about your Dad as it has helped with my understanding.
I think Jennifer it ends up being a relief. Dad chose to do it which helped & he was glad to have done so. Hope things continue to go well for your mum's changes..
And how cool you went to Manly for your honeymoon. 1974 it was a very different place. We were teaching in rural NSW & had each school hols at my parents.
A lovely read Denyse and yes such an iconic place. Whenever we visit Sydney a trip on the Many ferry to the beach is always a must-do! It's good you have these happy memories and that you felt well enough to drive there by yourself, well done!
I admit its been far too long for me to go on the Manly Ferry but as a young teen I have memories of a winter evening return to Manly (from girl guides camp on the south coast- so not a camper!) where Mum would be collecting me...and we screamed our way across the heads..it really was such a big sea, they cancelled after that trip. Unbeknowsed to me, Dad was also on that same ferry coming home from work and he said "was that you lot screaming'...um yes Dad!
I am glad to have returned last Thursday too.
I am having an up and down recovery right now but need to allow time for it!
Thanks to you and Sue for managing the link up while Min is away.
Take care,
Denyse
PS we think the wind here today is coming off snow somewhere??
Thanks for your Manly memories, Denyse ! It's great to have such an iconic place to call "home", isn't it. For me, home is my English home, where we lived until I was 8. Then when we came to Australia for my Dad's work, Manly became home. We lived in several houses before Mum and Dad bought the place in Fairlight, but they were all in shouting distance of Manly . The most memorable "home" was when we lived on the top floor of "Hilderlea", the 6 story block situated just above Manly Pool. Literally a hop skip and a jump from the best place that a kid could live in. You could see the Pool from our front room, and could be swimming out to a pontoon within five minutes of leaving home. We lived in Paradise !
I haven't been down there for many years now. We went down there for a "trip down memory lane" about 6 years ago - Roy is also from the area so we went to all the places we remembered along the Northern Beaches. Took lots of pictures etc, it was lovely . But neither of us has any desire to go down there again. I found that Manly no longer resembles the place that I grew up in , and these days I'm happy to live in Queensland in my home of 30 years. I enjoy looking at "old Manly" pix on the Facebook groups ! But thanks for reminding me of "home" .
So pleased you read and commented Stella. You are right that it is NOT the Manly we grew up near and were part of, but some of the scenes and places have not changed via memories. And of course, Mum and Dad were still part of Manly and my stories until 2007 for Mum and 2024 for Dad.
Nice to know that you and Roy found some places to share the memories.
Our old high school still had some parts that were very familiar when I got a tour back in 2015.
Always nice to know from you when I have shared some words and pics you can enjoy too and share your stories.
Thank you!
Take care,
Denyse x
PS 30 years in Queensland! That's a big connection.
Yes, I came to Brisbane with my ex-husband, he was in the Army and we moved quite a bit. I'd always vowed that wherever we were when our daughter got to high school age, that was where I'd stop, either with or without him. So that was why we ended up in Brisbane, in 2000. He and I separated at that point, and as often happens with Defence Force divorces, you have to compromise on where you are going to live. So Brisbane it was , and has remained. So I've lived in Brizzy for longer than I ever lived in Manly ! Anyway, good to have those memories - thanks for your post today !
That's interesting to know more about you Stella too! Thank you. When I was principal at Richmond NSW we had quite a few families whose parents were in RAAF. And it was a little bit more challenging for their kids when both Mum & Dad were in medical side & could be sent to (pretty sure it was East Timor then) serve & hopefully one parent could stay in Oz till other parent returned. There were some welfare people from RAAF who kept in touch with us at the school too
Great memories, Denyse and look at you with your P plate. We revisited Manly when we came to Sydney earlier in the year. I wanted to revisit my childhood memories of school holidays catching the ferry to Manly and having fish and chips. We had a great time and it was good to introduce Mike to this beautiful part of Sydney. Thanks for sharing your treasured memories with us at Wednesdays Words and Whimsy. It's great to have you back linking up. Enjoy your week. Sue L #TeamWWWhimsy xx
I did think of you and your Manly memories as I put this post together Sue. It's lovely to have that connection!
I am pleased you and Mike got to enjoy Manly too.
Thank you also for managing the link up along with Deb while Min is away.
Thanks for the comment on the P plate! Such an exciting day..in the last school hols before the HSC and I think I visited all my friends that afternoon!
It's a beautiful spot Denyse. I remember visiting there when we did our Sydney trip many years ago. It had a little bit of everything - and on top of that it holds all those happy memories for you.
That's a lovely way of putting it Leanne. Thank you for sharing your memories too.
So many come to mind when I visit, of course, from times long gone but also times that were very meaningful in my life. Even though it's long gone, the jewellers' shop where I worked in school and teachers' college holidays was on the Corso and that's where B and I ordered my specially made engagement ring.
Not a nice day here for sight seeing at all...but like all things, weather changes!
I am so inspired by you, D. I'm so glad you were met with such a gorgeous day when you were challenging yourself, well deserved.
I also love all the photos you shared, especially the older ones. I love that you always have such beautiful, rich history to share with us.
Oh how kind B.
Thank you.
I too am inspired by what you are able to do and be despite the challenges at times.
I am enjoying reconnecting here too!!
Take care,
Denyse x

Thank you. Will be a little longer than July for catch up. Still taking small steps! D xx

It does! Balgowlah RSL is in Seaforth & met my parents there for many a meal! Yay for connections to places!
My memory is better than I think!
